Price

Prices for inflatable kayaks can differ quite a lot depending on the size, how many people it can hold or even the manufacturer of it.

You may feel you don’t want to pay out for an expensive kayak, especially if you’re only going to use it at certain times of the year.

Well, these kayaks discussed all come under the £650.00 so it won’t break the bank but it will guarantee years of fun out on the water!

Size

Size of the kayak mostly depends on your own preference in regards to if you want a 1, 2 or 3 man kayak.

Think about some of these questions to consider though.

  • Are you looking to kayak solo or tandem?
  • How tall are you and would you benefit from additional legroom?
  • Would you be looking for something with more storage?
  • Are you looking for something wider and more stable or slim and streamline?

As I said, most inflatable kayaks these days have the ability to remove a seat so you can paddle solo in a longer kayak with great storage room for camping or fishing gear.

I’ll make sure to list the sizes of each kayak as we go so you know what is more suited to you.

Type of kayaking

This all comes down to where you will be looking to kayak.

A lake, a river or ocean bays?

All these kayaks can be used in either water type, they are designed and built to be able to float and paddle from calm to moderate sized waves.

If you’re thinking of white-water kayaking, then an inflatable kayak is not what you want.

You’ll be looking for a kayak that is more rigid in that case.

REI.com gives a very good breakdown on where you can kayak and what types of kayaks you can use

The kayaks listed below will provide a well-balanced, streamline design that is easy to paddle.

Easy to carry

One of the main benefits about an inflatable kayak over the standard plastic or fibreglass kayak is how easy it is to transport!

These inflatable kayaks come in a backpack form that can be easily put into the boot of the car and then thrown over your shoulder when travelling to the water’s edge.

They are much lighter and hassle free, so no need to waste time strapping anything to the roof of your car.

So, just to recap

When looking for your first or next inflatable kayak, consider these certain things:

  • Make sure you choose an inflatable kayak that is going to fit the minimum required people who are looking to go kayaking
  • Think of the main areas you’ll be looking to kayak but like I said any of these kayaks can handle most water types.
  • Make sure your kayak has good reviews; this gives you a very good understanding of how well it performs.
  • Keep an eye on your budget and look for any added extras you can get e.g. paddles or pump included.
  • If you need additional storage, look for a kayak that has a cargo net or even maybe look at going for a bigger kayak so you can store more gear.
  • A kayak that has fins will make sure to keep you straight and narrow otherwise you may start to go in circles.
  • These kayaks all come with a warranty so you can always get your money back if the kayak is broken, ripped or torn on your first kayak outing.

All of these kayaks discussed are great overall and will perform with excellence on any water type.

They all have amazing reviews which I do advise checking before you buy but it all comes down to what is right for you and your own needs.

  1. I love the look of these inflatable kayaks. They look so comfortable in comparison to the conventional wooden ones. They even have blow up seats in them. Looks like a lot of fun for the whole family.

I have always enjoyed a canoe shaped boat more than the conventional oval shaped ones as I find them much easier to maneuver and steer.

It’s also great and comforting to read that these kayaks hold up in rough waters. I worried that because that are so light that the waves would just turn them over.

    1. Hi Michel,

They are very comfortable and great for families.

Super easy to inflate and deflate and will guarantee to hold their shape and buoyancy for your entire time on the water.

  2. I think you just helped me make a decision. I was thinking about Christmas presents or my family for some time now.

I think I’ll buy a Kajak for three people, this is something we can enjoy together all year long.

The Itiwit kayak looks great, they’ll love it and it’s also not too heavy for me to carry, this job will be on me every time anyway 🙂

Instead of another computer game this is a perfect option.

    1. Hi Stefan,

  3. Hey there,

so recently, I had this amazing opportunity to try out kayakíng for the first time in my life and my God, what a phenomenal experience! I really enjoyed the thrill and joy of this activity, it’s a such an awesome feeling to swim in Kayak in the middle of very beautiful nature and just go with the flow! This article came just in time as I am looking for some affordable Kayaks for new comers. Right of the bat I want to tell You that I really appreciate short and informative descriptions to each inflatable kayak, I found them to be very helpful, great job! As far as kayaks themselves go, well one of them caught most of my attention – ITIWIT 2 MAN INFLATABLE KAYAK. I really like the design of this kayak, looks very stylish and sleek! What I’ve found very interesting about it is that You can remove the actual seats and use them for solo kayaking, that’s exciting! I also really admire the big gaps between each seat, therefore it makes for some very comfortable sitting! Thanks for this great article and keep up the cool work ! 😉

    1. Hi Evald,

I’m glad you like the write up, I have looked around online and seen these are the best inflatable kayaks on the market.

Kayaking is such an aging experience and everybody should try it at least once! I do highly recommend the ITIWIT  kayak, great design and has great customised options.

I’ve tried and tested it myself, perfect on the water!

      Happy kayaking!

  4. This is an incredible article.  I have been looking for something thats easy to put on the water in calm situations like small rivers, ponds and smaller lakes.  Im looking for something I can throw my fishing gear in and have a nice quiet day on the water.  I havent had good experiences with canoes.

Are these stable enough to do something like this or would I forever be fighting with balance.  I look forward to your answer.  Oh one more thing.  I weigh about 300 pounds.  Am I getting in too deep or is my weight okay?

    Dale

    1. Hi Dale,

The larger inflatable kayaks are great for fishing simply as it allows for greater space to hold any fishing equipment. They are very stable and some kayaks such as the Sea Eagle SE 370 Pro can hold up to around 300lbs in weight so you should be fine with this.

  5. I didn’t know there was such a thing as an inflatable kayak, but what a great idea! So easy to transport and carry. Thanks for all the information. My sister in law has just started kayaking on the local lagoon and ocean near her home and I think the ITIWIT 1 man inflatable kayak would suit here. I’m just wondering though, how much time does it take to inflate with a hand pump?

    1. Hi Ann,

The inflatable kayak isn’t as well known as the standard hard plastic kayak but they are incredibly convenient as they can be packed away and very easy to carry.

It depends on the kayak and size but the average inflatable kayak would take around 10-15 minutes to inflate fully.

  6. We purchased the Sevylor Tahiti Plus kayak in the beginning of this past Spring.  My wife and I used to go white water rafting a lot when we were dating 20 plus years ago. Now we are parents, and have really been trying to get outside more so we stared camping a lot.

I wanted a kayak that could hold 3 of us, but since we would only use the kayak a few times a year, I wanted something I could easily store, so I started looking at inflatable kayaks. I liked the Sevylor Tahiti Plus because it could hold 3 people, and was stable.  We took it up to Raystown Lake a few times this year, and also rode it down the Youghiogheny River. It was a lot of fun, and very stable. I felt safe with my wife and 10 year old in it.

    1. Hi James,

Great to hear! Sounded like a very fun trip.

The Sevylor Tahiti Plus is an amazing kayak that provides an incredible experience on the water. That is what’s so handy with these inflatable kayaks is that they can be packed and stored away very easy, especially if space is an issue.

I must get a paddle down the Youghiogheny River sometime, I’ve heard good things!

  7. I have continuously enjoyed a canoe-shaped boat over the standard oval formed ones as I realize them abundant easier to maneuver and steer.

I love Sevylor Tahiti Plus Inflatable Kayak. I have a future wish that I need to buy one of them and bookmarking this page for future reference. These kayaks even have blown up seats in them and that is suitable for lots of fun with the whole family.

    1. Hi Mzakapon,

Yes, the inflatable kayak does bear a resemblance to a canoe and because of this it allows for greater storage that’s easy to access right away.

Definitely, check out the Sevylor Tahiti Plus – it’s a great, stable and very enjoyable inflatable kayak.

  8. Would you believe me if I told you I have never had an experience with a kayak, and only one unforgettable experience camping, when I was a student in England, I spent one night camping, with a church group in the Lake district; it poured with rain and the water was running under me; sorry to say, I booked into a nearby guest house for the remainder of the stay. I grew up and still live 5 minutes from the beach, love the outdoors , I see paddle boats for rent but never dared ,as I am not a good swimmer. Would you allow a non swimmer on a kayak? Looks like fun, but too much of a safety risk for me.Continue to Enjoy.

    1. Hi Codevonish,

I’m sorry to hear about your bad camping experience.

Try it again, I’ll guarantee you’ll want to get back especially if you are lover of the outdoors.

You don’t necessarily need to know how to swim when kayaking as the majority of the time you’re wearing a lifejacket anyway. Check out my post about it here: https://campkayakcanoe.com/kay

  9. Hello Ronan. Good to see you share this post revealing the 11 Best Inflatable Kayaks in 2018. Purchasing Inflatable Kayaks online can be so tricky. It’s very helpful that you gave criteria on how to choose a great inflatable kayak. One of these criteria I always look out for generally is reviews. I love to hear what other people say about a product.

The list is amazing. Keep sharing…

    1. Thank you Barry, I’m glad you liked it. Always check the reviews before purchasing so you know that the kayak has been tried and tested.

  10. The Challenger seems like it has the most durability among the one-man selections. Not just that, I kind of like the design as well, so that always plays a part in my own search. The affordability plus durability makes the Challenger stand out the most in my opinion. I haven’t read the reviews on it yet, but my initial feeling with this product is pretty good.

    1. Hi Todd,

The Challenger is a very good kayak for solo kayaking. I’m the same, design and look is always one of the main considerations I make when purchasing a new kayak. Have to look good on the water!

  11. I never knew there were inflatable kayaks. This seems to be great for people that are limited in space. They are reasonably priced too. My wife has mentioned that we should give it a try this summer. I have never kayaked before. Would the inflatable be ok for beginners if we decide to make this a hobby? We will rent one first to see if we like it first, but was wondering if we should get a traditional kayak first and then make the move to inflatable.

    1. Hi David

Whatever experience you have kayaking, inflatable kayaks are always an option. Some people actually prefer the inflatable kayak as they can be a lot more affordable and more lightweight. They are very easy assembled and can be full inflated in a matter of minutes.

Inflatable kayaks are just as solid and rigid as a traditional hard plastic kayak so you shouldn’t have any worries about it sinking as they are incredibly robust

  12. OMG! Inflatable kayaks! Wow!. Though I’m a water enthusiast. I like going for dives especially scuba diving and generally I like going on waters either by boats, yachts and so on. Never have I come across inflatable kayaks. This surely would spell a lot of fun and would save money and energy from carry kayaks about. This indeed is the game changer. The fact that its going for less than a 1000 is cool. I like the ITIWIT 2 MAN INFLATABLE KAYAK the most.

    1. Hi RoDarrick,

That is the good thing about inflatable kayaks is that they are so easy and light to carry. They actually can work out a lot more affordable compared to the hard plastic kayak.

  13. Hello; Can I use the Kayak for any other reason at sea except for recreation? The Kayaks are of varying sizes I can see. However, I am not sure that there is space for food should I desire to spend a whole day at sea.

I like the ease to carry the Kayak I would not need to hire any removal to transport the Kayak. I love how you advise reading the reviews before buying. Your information is beneficial.

    Dorcas

    1. Hi DorcasW,

Inflatable kayaks are normally used for recreation purposes. More as a hobby and for your enjoyment.

You would be surprised just how much space you actually have in a kayak. You’ll have enough room to hold food and drink if you plan on kayaking for the day.

You should definitely give it a go you never know, you may have found a new hobby

  14. This is a very detailed article on inflatable kayaks! Thanks for showing us so many options. I had no idea that inflatable kayaks were so popular and inexpensive. I have 2 kayaks and it is extremely difficult to transport them in our vehicle. An inflatable kayak looks to be a great option for me to pursue. Do you know if there are risks of puncture and how durable these are? That is the only concern I have, although many of them seem to have good reviews for durability.

    1. Hi Dave,

Inflatable kayaks are actually very robust and can handle a lot of weight depending on the size of it. They are generally made of PVC or other materials such as Hypalon and Nitrylon. These are incredibly durable and offer a lot of protection.

If a puncture was to occur, all inflatable kayaks come with additional patches to repair any holes or scrapes.
